mindbender replied: "Doctors study drugs and try to decide which is best for any problem.
When they prescribe something they understand it may have side effects but the drug company representatives tell them to keep using it and the side effects will fade. That is what they say, but I think it is not always true.
Doctors have very narrow guidelines they must follow so as to determine what works and what doesn't. People need to understand what is behind the doctors thinking and work with that. Also, some medications should not be halted suddenly, patients should taper off slowly.
May I suggest you go to google or other search engine of choice and enter zetia +side effects. See if yours is mentioned, and learn if it is interacting with something else you might be eating or taking. And see if you should slowly taper off or quit cold turkey.
There are foods that can help lower cholesterol naturally. Most of them are the dark green and the orange colored ones. Broccoli, green beans, peas, carrots and squash.
Hope that helps."
Faith K replied: "Doctors make no money off the pharmaceuticals. Unfortunately, everything has side effects, its a matter of find the medication that works best for you. If you do not trust your doctor to do this, get a new one! You should feel comfortable asking your doctor questions and be able to be honest with him. I highly recommend you getting the book "Healthcare for Less" by Michelle Katz. This book will help you through this process, putting everything into simple terms and help you save money in your healthcare. You can get it at your local Barnes and Noble for $15 or on for about $10.....this will help navigate your way through the system, and get you a doctor you can trust."
How can the cholesterol drug Zetia bypass the liver when everything else goes there first? I've had really bad side effects from all cholesterol medications, including Zetia. Is this just false advertising?
The side effects include tired, achy, can't hardly move a muscle type feelings.
Scott L replied: "It doesn't "bypass the liver". That's not what they say. They claim is works in the digestive tract and prevents absorption of cholesterol from FOOD. Most cholesterol in the body is produced by the liver asa normal part of it's functioning, which this drug doesn't do anything about. You could do the exact same thing by eating foods low in cholestorol. Statins lower the production of Liver cholestorol
Eventually it will be metabolized by the liver. Everything is"
Is someone on drug ZETIA for lowering cholesterol? I have gone off Lipitor because of side effects (will never touch a statin again) and have heard that Zetia is a reasonably good drug with little or no side effects. Would appreciate feedback from a user or ex-user only. Am aware of how it works so dont need that type of info. Thanks
dat93 replied: "Yes, I have been taking Zetia with no side effects. I am able to control cholesterol mostly with diet, but this gives added protection for me. Then again I also take Lipitor and have had no side effects from that, though I had switched from Zocor because of side effects. My last total was 118, but I also have other heath issues that had caused Hypercholesterolemia.
Good luck to you"
Anyone ever had any bad side effects taking statins? I had an experience taking lovastatin where I got "lost" in my own neighborhood....for a few minutes. Scared me. I changed to a non statin one... zetia . I take pravastatin at night but no side effects. My son has to start taking them. Just want to know what to look for. I googled it but would like to hear some personal experiences.
Cricket... I take half a trasadone to sleep. It works good....but a whole one...which the dr. prescribed...made me sleep all day. Felt like I had a hangover. Like you said...you have to pay attention and not believe everything a dr. says. They're not inside your body. Also..I take a half mg of risperdal for PTSD and panic attacks. He prescribed a whole one3 times a day. I could hardly make up a bed. It was like climbing a mountain. We need to participate in our treatment. If your dr. won't let you participate...get a different dr. They're not gods.
towanda replied: "NO problem with Lipitor. Always check out the drug online for side effects. You utimately end up being responsible for yourself and only you know yourself. I did have a bad experience with a high blood pressure med. They thought I was having heart problems and order a very expensive cath. My arteries or veins were ok, all they needed to do was change that med. Always know the side effects and watch like crazy and do those tests every three months to check his liver. Good luck.
And when they do blood work, I always ask for a copy. I put the results in a spread sheet and add each new set of tests. Sometimes you may be normal but there may be a general trend you want to see and it could take place over some time and you want to be aware of it and point it out to your doctor. And if they don't pay attention, get another one."
Stella replied: "I take Atorvastatin and have only had some leg cramps, nothing too bad. I have read that statins can cause memory loss, but I'm not sure how reliable that was. I guess its up to each person to check out their own medications. Good luck !"
ndnquah replied: "If it's Lipitor...yes I did and will never take any other kind of meds than I already take!! Seems like when I try a new med I have a reaction and it makes me feel really weird!!! Weirder than I already am!!!"
sage seeker replied: "Took Lipitor for a long time with absolutely no side effects. Changed up later to Simvastatin and have had minor effects...some weight gain, lethargy etc. Planning to go back to Lipitor, although it is more expensive"
Just Joyce replied: "Simvastatin. . . 40 MG at bedtime. . . No I have had no side effects. . . but I take 8 other medications also. . . It is for lowering Cholesterol. goldwing replied: "medical evidence has shown that a side effect in some people is Arthritis, perhaps other things...some people! This is NOT something to take at face value here...your son must be VERY aware of his body, what is going on with it at all times (without hysteria and imagination). IF he thinks arthritis is accelerated, discuss with doctor, probably get off statins all together. NEVER take Statins with Niacin (A vitiamin B available at all drug stores and health food stores! No one tells you that, but the interactions can leave perminent disability!
Personally, in the past 6 months or so, my arthritis has sprung forward greatly. I have put down the statins and replaced them with a tablespoon of oil in the morning and the same in the evening...probably better results than the pills for reducing hardening of arteries, etc. I have done this with my doctor's knowledge. He agrees with me. Statins are great for most people, but with reservations, as with all meds. This is not a one pill fits all deal here! Good luck, Goldwing"
Classy Granny replied: "I've been on the generic version of Zocor for about 4 months now with no side effects"
WooleyBooley again replied: "No, none. Read the sheet that accompanies your prescription. By the way-I first was on Pravastatin, wasn't effective. Now on 20 mg Crestor, does the job."
keeprockin replied: "I have no problems as am aware of with 'lipitor'
You should take them before bed,as that's the time cholesterol builds up.
If you took them at bedtime and were disorientated the day After, then refer to your doctor and he/she will probably try a different statin than the one your using. Never change any prescribed medicine without professional consultation"

People need to be very cautious with all the new drugs prescribed. The side effects can be profound."
Karen B replied: "I can't take any of the meds that are statins, I get extreme muscle cramping. I've tried 5 different ones and no luck."

Why doesn't Zetia come in dosages greater than 10mg? Zetia, since it metabolizes in the digestive track and not the liver, is my best bet in lowering cholesterol, but my latest test show the cholesterol level is still high. I understand Zetia only comes in 10mg dosages. Why is that? Wouldn't a higher dosage be preferable for someone like me who has side effects from statins contained in other cholesterol drugs. Please help! Thanks
Be my fan Please! replied: "My guess is that 11mg+ is harmful."
Liza replied: "I try to answer in layman's term.
For a drug to be marketed, it needs to go thru 5 stages in research.
At the last stage of research, humans are used to carried out experiments. This includes -
- what side effects will this medicine cause?
- what is the most appropriate effective dosage
- adverse drug reaction
- half life and metabolism of the drug.
- does the drug modify any blood picture or any biodata
- safety in pregnancy and paediatrics.
etc.
So, Zetia comes in 10mg is because at the research, they found out that 10mg is the safest dose that can achieve beneficial medical effects intended."
Sally replied: "10mg is the dose that was deemed safe and effective through research. I know you said you get adverse effects from statins, but Zetia can often be combined with statins to reduce the required dose of the statin. I'm not surprised that your cholesterol is still a little high after the Zetia, because it is not as effective as statins at reducing LDL."
gangadharan nair replied: "Ezetimibe is used together with lifestyle changes (diet, weight-loss, exercise) to reduce the amount of cholesterol (a fat-like substance) and other fatty substances in the blood. It may be used alone or in combination with an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (statin). Ezetimibe is in a class of medications called cholesterol-lowering medications. It works by preventing the absorption of cholesterol in the intestine.
Ezetimibe is available as 10 mg tablets in most markets. A combination preparation ezetimibe/simvastatin, which combines ezetimibe with a statin, is also available.
Ezetimibe is primarily metabolized in the liver and the small intestine via glucuronide conjugation with subsequent renal and biliary excretion. There has been great debate in the medical community on the use of ezetimibe in hypercholesterolemia."
Dr Frank replied: "I am afraid this is the optimum dose of Ezetimibe. It is not a particularly powerful drug, and as you probably know, ideally it was designed as an add on to statins rather than a substitute,(except in those that can't tolerate statins.) It is also worth remembering that though it definitely reduces cholesterol somewhat it has not yet been shown to affect outcomes or prevent deaths.
Also as long ago as 1994 the 4S study showed that statins not only reduce cholesterol, they save lives. This is NOT only due to their lipid lowering effect but the fact that they change the nature of pre-existing plaque, changing it from 'crispy' to 'rubbery'. This reduces the risk of it breaking off and effectively producing cholesterol emboli. This feature cannot be mimicked by any other drug and is definitely not a feature of Ezetimibe.
Even if it were possible to use a very small dose of a statin as well this would dramatically increase the statistics in your favour.
Pravastatin,no longer favoured as it has low potency,is often well tolerated in low doses. If this were tolerated when combined with Ezetimibe, it would improve your odds even if it did not dramatically lower your cholesterol."
Cholesterol Medication and side effects.? Many people have elevated cholestrol. Do you feel your level of muscel strength, mental abilities, physical conditions have changed since your were diognosed with High Cholestrol? Please review meds prescribed to you. I suddenly became so sick I was unable to work. My lower back gave way to muscel spasams, pain, preventing me from walking, dressing, etc. After numerous test with no conclusion, I research my symptons. All came back to my med., Lipitor. My doctor immediately removed me from the medicine; in three week I was starting to improve. In 6 weeks I felt 15 years younger. In 2 months I was on another med and it did the same thing in less than 1 month. Currently I take Zetia and Niacin and I have concern because of continuous indigestion. Diet and exercise not helping much. Do You have a simular problem or suggestion to improve the level of cholestrol? My doctor says stress is a lot of my problem. This life is stress. I need help and am looking for a natural cure.
lhee0726_gb replied: "Cholesterol Medications
Paying close attention to what you eat and how much physical activity you get are ways to lower your high blood cholesterol. These steps are generally the first line of therapy for anyone with high cholesterol. But because you have diabetes, your risk of heart disease and stroke is much higher than for someone without diabetes. That's why your healthcare provider will encourage you to eat a healthy diet and do regular physical activity to help reach optimal values. Taking a cholesterol-lowering medication can help bring those levels to goal. Learn more about each category and the benefits, side effects and risks.
Current goal recommendations are:
LDL — less than 100 mg/dL (an option of < 70 mg/dL in very high-risk patients)
HDL — greater than 40 mg/dL for men and greater than 50 mg/dL for women
triglycerides — less than 150 mg/dL
No medication should be discontinued without first consulting a physician. Treatment using cholesterol-lowering medications is generally long-term. Continuing the therapy is important even when you reach a healthy cholesterol level.
Types of cholesterol medications
Statins
Fibrates
Resins
Nicotinic Acid
Statins
For people with diabetes, lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol is usually the first priority. Several studies indicate that lowering LDL has significant benefits, including lowering the risk for cardiovascular disease. Statins are one of the most effective drugs for reducing elevated LDL cholesterol.
Most of statins' side effects are mild and generally go away as your body adjusts. Muscle problems and liver abnormalities are rare. If you have brown urine or muscle aches and pains, contact your doctor right away.
Side Effects:
Upset stomach
Abdominal pain
Gas
Cramps
Constipation
Muscle soreness, pain and weakness
Liver abnormalities
Commonly prescribed statins include:
Atorvastatin (Lipitor)
Fluvastatin (Lescol)
Lovastatin (Mevacor)
Pravastatin (Pravachol)
Rosuvastatin Calcium (Crestor)
Simvastatin (Zocor)
Fibrates
Fibrates are best at lowering triglycerides and in some cases increasing HDL (good cholesterol) levels. These drugs are not very effective in lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol. That's why fibrates are generally used in people whose triglycerides are high or whose HDL is low, after reaching LDL goal.
For people with diabetes, it's still questionable whether increasing HDL cholesterol with fibrates in the presence of low LDL levels (lower than 3.4 mmol/L, or 130 mg/dL) will be more beneficial than statin therapy alone. Studies are ongoing.
Side Effects:
Upset stomach or diarrhea
Increased risk of gallstones
Increased effect of blood-thinning medications
Anemia
Some commonly prescribed fibrates include:
Bezabifrate (Bezalip)
Fenofibrate (Lofibra, Tricor)
Gemfibrozil (Lopid)
Resins
Resins are also called bile acid-binding drugs. Your body uses cholesterol to make bile, an acid used in the digestive process. These medicines bind to bile, so it can't be used during digestion. Your liver responds by making more bile. The more bile your liver makes, the more cholesterol it uses. That means less cholesterol is left to circulate through your bloodstream.
The effect of bile acid sequestrants is to lower LDL cholesterol by 10 to 20 percent. Sometimes these drugs are prescribed in combination with statins. When combined, they can lower LDL-cholesterol by over 40 percent.
Side effects:
Constipation
Stomach irritation or diarrhea
Gas/Bloating/Heartburn
Dizziness
Some commonly prescribed medications include:
Cholestyramine (Questran, Prevalite, L-Cholest)
Colestipol (Cholestid)
Colesevalam (Welchol)
Nicotinic Acid
Nicotinic acid, also called niacin or vitamin B3, is a potent lipid-lowering drug that works in the liver by affecting the production of blood fats. It's used to lower triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, and raise HDL ("good") cholesterol. Niacin comes in prescription form and as "dietary supplements." Dietary supplement niacin is not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the same way that prescription niacin is. It may contain widely variable amounts of niacin — from none to much more than the label states. The amount of niacin may even vary from lot to lot of the same brand. Dietary supplement niacin must not be used as a substitute for prescription niacin. It should not be used for lowering cholesterol because of potential very serious side effects.
For those people with diabetes, recent studies suggest that lower dosages and newer formulations of niacin can be used safely by patients with good glycemic control.
Side effects:
Skin flushing
Dizziness
Skin rashes
Stomach irritation
Elevated blood glucose
Liver damage
Headache
Some common products in this category include:
Niaspan (prescription)
Niacin (over the counter)"
Stanley Fishbien replied: "Lipitor is VERY closely associated with liver cancer . In most cases from 3 months to 1 1/2 years after starting on it . I quit taking it just a week ago , and replaced it with 2 cloves of raw garlic per day .
Garlic is a natural cholesterol "medicine" , and it won`t cause the damage Lipitor and other cholesterol medications do .
